Adoption is one of the best ways to complete your family. While many people find that pet stores have the perfect dog breed and the perfect dog that they are looking for, this is for a reason. Pet stores breed animals for sale, and in a world with a fast-growing overpopulation of pets this is a problem. Animal activists beg people to spay and neuter their pets to help control this overpopulation, yet there are puppy and kitty mills all over the world that specialize in breeding the perfect pets and producing them in mass quantities to be sold in pet stores all around the United States.

There are a variety of benefits to adoption that many people fail to consider when deciding how they are going to get their new pet. Your local humane society, rescue shelter, or animal shelter should have plenty of animals for you to browse through to see if they have the type of pet that you will be willing to call your own.

When you adopt from one of your local adoption centers, you do not pay to purchase a pet but they do usually require a 'donation' in order to take the pet home with you. The donation is designed to offset some of the costs in preparing the pet to go home with you, including veterinary care, kenneling, and any vaccinations or sterilizations that were made.

If you don't think you are comfortable adopting a pet who needs a good, loving home like yours rather than purchasing one from a pet store, stop in to one of the shelters and look at one of these adorable, adoptable pets and make that decision then. At that point, you will probably change your mind.
